The viewpoint Educators, Counsellors, parents and students on JEE 2021

4 lakh questions in 12 languages, exam to be held in 4 cycle

It is welcome a step in the right direction. Reduction of questions will give more time to students to solve. Introducing numerical will definitely favor the logical and analytical mind. Allowing the students to appear for a second chance in the same term will give them a good exposure to crack it.

I feel it is an excellent decision to give a choice in answering the questions.
Making a choice will always promote agency in learning, focus on multiple intelligence and also helps students to come out of the rote learning without understanding—numerous chances of attempting to allow them to bring out their best.

It’s a welcome change for children as JEE exam is very competitive, challenging and covers the vast syllabus of classes 11 and 12. Keeping present unprecedented conditions in mind, giving choices and multiple sessions of the examination are a breather for JEE aspirants. I, as a parent as well as a teacher, appreciate the sensitivity of NTA for young minds.

Indian examination bodies gave multiple similar opportunities to candidates like SAT. It will help students improve their scores if they are not able to give their best in the first attempt without losing a whole year before the next shot. Numerical questions will eliminate guesswork and test students on their actual merit and understanding.

It will be interesting to see how many students choose to take the JEE in languages other than English. That will show us the impact of coaching centres’ impact on students entrance prep throughout the country as I am yet to come across a test prep for JEE/NEET, which does not teach in English.

Due to the Covid situation, Boards may reschedule their Calendar. It is a benefit for the students so that they get ample opportunities as per their convenience. Moreover SAT, GRE TOEFL are also conducted multiple times in a year; this will be in sync with international best practices.

Allowing the child to appear four times a year will increase the burden on children who will continue to attend coaching classes to perform better next time and hamper regular studies, may also lead to stress and frustrations, two opportunities seem to be sufficient.

By conducting the same exam so many times, questions will get repeated as the syllabus is fixed. Over a period of time, students will mug up and score high. It could adversely effect on quality.

  1. Learning is always messy and never ever straight-forward. By encouraging someone to choose difficult tasks and stretch themselves, we think it will help them develop their mindset. This growth mindset could help develop a sense of both courage and curiosity, in turn.
