Key Takeaways from 2020

Reflections & Learnings

Brig (Dr) Sunil Kumar Moudgil (Retd)

A story about the Choluteca bridge of Honduras is fascinating! Honduras is notorious for hurricanes. The 1930 vintage Bridge built again in 1996. Realizing, it will face extreme weather conditions, brought in the best architectural minds to reconstruct. In 1998, Honduras was also hit by Hurricane. Roads were wiped out and every other bridge destroyed. However, Choluteca bridge due to its strong foundation survived. But the river changed its path, no longer ran under the bridge, making bridge redundant. Analogous to our life, the Coronavirus has changed the world in ways we had never imagined. Takeaway – Build to adapt and not only to last.

With the advent of the digital age, there needs to be a calibrated approach to our children’s use of technology. The invasion of electronic means in our daily lives is inevitable. This only adds to the current set of parents’ responsibilities to acclimatize their offspring with the optimal use of technology. The ease of doing things using technology should only open more avenues to be creative and show faster results and not hijack creativity. As part of responsible parenting, the parents themselves must lead by example. Studies showcase that the children begin by imitating the parent and forming the habit. Let there be Renaissance 2021, where each parent demonstrates productive and limited use of technology to be a role model for their children.

The year 2020 will be remembered by all as it left us thinking that life is a most generous gift to humanity. With all odds stacked against us, we still made it and are moving into 2021. I learnt several lessons. The most important was the realization that we are individually so insignificant part of this universe. But staying together in difficult times can give excellent results.
Looking forward to the new year as another opportunity to serve the Nation to help people achieve self-realization, help students search for their inner potential, and above all, peace for everyone. May the force be with all of you during this year and guide you to move in the right direction.

This pandemic changed our mindset and approach towards life. We realized that materialism and consumerism, for which we have been running madly even neglecting our health and family, is not a necessity at all. Our priorities changed. When forced to stay home, we started spending time with family, taking part and helping in household chores. We became tolerant, developed endurance and started looking at things from different perspectives – enabling us to explore several options like online teaching, work from home, e-marketing, a global collaboration to fight the pandemic, etc.

I feel grateful to have had decent work and overall blessed life during the pandemic. I experienced some highs and lows only to enlighten me with some lessons for the life.
Learn to let go — Let go of people who sap energy. Let go. Free yourself from thoughts that sap energy. Let go.

Enjoy the process and not the result — While it’s good to have an end-goal, working each day being too focused on results may not fetch happiness. Pandemic taught us to live in the present. So, just enjoy the process for your next role change or your exam preparation.

2020 wasn’t an average year. It created a “new normal”. However, there were lessons which adversity taught us:-
2020 reminded everyone that life is fragile and essential to ENJOY and savor every moment.
The year fast-tracked digitalization and moved everyone towards technology.
It taught that we could live with minimal wants and that vast majority of our worldly needs aren’t leading to happiness.
Most importantly, the lockdowns ensured it was time to self-reflect and LIVE LIFE to the FULLEST.

2020 was not the year to get everything we wanted. It was the year to appreciate everything we have.
In one of the darkest years of our shared existence, we have shown our brightest…. TOGETHERNESS
Feeding, caring, connecting, protecting, and doing our best to make things better. Not just for our families and neighbours, but for hundreds of thousands of people around the world.
2021 will be a Year to implement all the lessons we learned from 2020
Let us join our hands to make the best out of 2021.

In every situation, no matter how negative it is, you can always find a spark of light. And this is also the case here. Being reminded to be grateful for what you have, being able to slow down, experiencing joy from sharing with the ones you love or letting the planet we live on rest and recover for a bit.
Life is what you make of it. If you solely focus on the negative, that’s all you’ll ever see. But if you care to look beyond that, you’ll find the golden nuggets hidden away in the mud.
There is no rainbow without the rain. And after rain comes sunshine.

While coping with the crisis, It was an opportunity to rediscover fundamental values of humanity and the bonds that connect us. We now have it in our hands to lay the foundation for a safer, healthier and cleaner life on planet earth. We have the technology and the means to come out more robust if we understand that human wellbeing and the health of the planet are two sides of the same coin. Now is the time to retire old dogmas and to give way to a fresh start. We are capable of learning. You are the master of your destiny.
