Parent’s Guide: How to Support Your Child During Exams
Exams can be a stressful time—not just for students, but also for parents. You want your child to succeed, be focused, and remain mentally and physically healthy. Unfortunately, sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you may contribute to the external pressures that your children feel. That is why it is important to know how and when to provide a calm, stable support system during this time. The responsibility of a parent when exams approach is not to be another teacher, or another critic; you need to be a steady support system that promotes confidence, stability, and emotional well-being.
One of the most helpful ways to support your child is to provide an environment that is calm and positive, or as calm and positive as possible. Children pick up on the energy in their environment. If the home feels tense and chaotic, that will only distract your child and raise their internal anxiety levels. Keep the home environment light and supportive. Avoid things that may add noise, fighting, and unnecessary stress during your child’s study time. Give your child a focused space with adequate light, a comfortable seat and sufficient privacy. Even small changes can help build a focused mindset.
Many parents, with positive intentions can often pressure their children to study more.
