Eligibility Criteria for Becoming a Professor

To be eligible for becoming a professor in India, an individual should keep in mind the following points:-

  • A candidate must have passed their 10th and 12th standard with a minimum percentage of 50 in any stream. From a recognized board.
  • A candidate must have done his or her graduation and post-graduation from a recognized institution or university. The minimum percentage requirement is 55%.
  • To become a professor, a Ph.D. degree is mandatory.
  • Before a Ph.D. degree, you have to clear entrance exams such as UGC NET, GATE, etc. To pursue this profession.
  • Candidates can carry on their Ph.D. degrees in any education stream or any education field.

Entrance Exams for Becoming a Professor

1. NET – National Eligibility Test is conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency) under UGC (University Grants Commission). This test is commonly known as UGC NET. This examination is conducted two times a year to select candidates for lecturers and professors. Candidates who have scored 55% marks in their post-graduation are eligible for this examination.

2. SLET – State Level Eligibility Test is also conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency). This examination is conducted for the selection of assistant professors. Once you have cleared this entrance examination, you will be eligible to work as a professor and lecturer in a state-level university or college.

3. GATE – GATE refers to the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. This examination is conducted by the GATE Committee. This examination is conducted one time a year. This entrance exam score is valid for 3 years.

4. CSIR NET – Council of Scientific and Industrial Research NET is conducted by NTA. This is a national-level entrance examination that is conducted twice a year. Candidates from different science streams and fields are eligible for professors and lecturers positions.

Types of Professors

  • Professors – A professor is a specialized educator who teaches students in a specific field of study.
  • Assistant Professors – An assistant professor is a professor who assists a senior professor.
  • Researcher – A researcher’s job involves conducting research, surveys, and performing tests. Also, they have to write articles on the professor’s area of expertise.
  • Associate Professors – An Associate Professor’s job entails attending conferences, teaching, conducting research, concerns, resolving administrative, and overseeing students in their course work, among other things.
  • HOD – HOD is in charge of managing different educational departments at a university or higher education institution.

Pay Scale of Professors

The Average Salary of a professor lies between INR 5, 00,000- 35, 00,000. The salary of a professor increases with increase in experience, skills and qualifications.

  • Professors- 5,11,400 – 23,00,000 per annum
  • Assistant Professors- 3,50,000 – 7,00,000 per annum
  • Lecturer- 3,00,000 – 6,00,000 per annum

  • Head of the Department- 7,00,000- 25,00,000 per annum
