The date is March 8th, 2025, which is traditionally the International Women’s Day (IWD) through the whole world when women are celebrated not only for being similar to men but for their concerted effort in the universal promotion and call for gender equality. The subject “Accelerate Action,” this time, leads us to the thought that although we have made progress, the road to a truly gender-equal world needs upgrading and intensifying the works.

Let us Look Back – The History and Significance of IWD

The birth of International Women’s Day was amidst the early 20th century labor movement, a period of significant social and industrial change. In 1910, with the Clara Zetkin’s main proposal, it was initiated, and it marked the 1917 Russian women’s strike, which was the first one. March 8th is the day that has become the symbol of collective female power and determination. The United Nations’ official inclusion of IWD in 1975 cemented its international significance.

It is not only a day of commemoration, but it is also a stage for action, which means raising awareness of gender inequalities and advocating for women’s rights. It’s a challenge for us to take the lead and to solve problems like the economic disparity, the political underrepresentation, and the gender-based crime. This event aims at bringing together women from different backgrounds and making a contribution to the termination of the laws, policies, and social norms.

The 2025 theme, “Accelerate Action,” turns the light to the fact that still today the remaining worldwide women’s issues need to be handled promptly.
