Scope of Career in Biotechnology

After the covid-19 pandemic, biotechnologists have gained after creating the vaccination for covid-19 or the study of the virus.

Biotechnology is a technology based on biology which incorporates biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that improve life on earth.

Moreover, in the decomposition method, we use the biological process of micro-organisms to make helpful products such as bread, cheese, and dairy.

Modern biotechnology deals with technology that provides a more efficient industrial manufacturing process reduce carbon footprints, and use clean energy. It deals with the production of biopharmaceuticals and biological using genetically modified microbes, fungi, plants and animals.

Application of biotechnology-

Biotechnology is applied in therapeutics, diagnostics, genetically modified crops for agriculture, processed food, bio-remediation, wastewater treatment, and energy production.

Scope of Biotechnology

There is a broad scope of biotechnology as you can work on pharmaceutical research, medical science, environmental engineering, health care, genetics, microbiology and many more. Here is some sector where you can pursue a career in Biotechnology:

  • Dairy technology
  • Drug and pharmaceuticals research
  • Environment control
  • Energy management
  • Food Biotechnology
  • Agriculture science

There is also the government sector which works on these activities. For example, it comes under the Ministry of Science, Department of Biotechnology, Indian Institute of serum, Bharat biotech.

Here are some most demanding careers in this field-

  • Epidemiologists
  • Genetic counsellor
  • Biomedical engineer
  • Zoologist and wildlife biologist
  • Microbiologist
  • Chemical technician
  • Biochemists and biophysicists
  • Biological technicians
  • Medical scientists
  • Biotechnology research scientists

BIOMEDICAL ENGINEER

Their job is to deal with problems related to medicine and biology. The main aim is to design artificial organs, diagnostic machines, and biomedical devices.

 MEDICAL SCIENTIST

The work of medical scientists is to investigate different types of diseases and to find their prevention methods. Biomedical scientists can conduct their research in a laboratory and use living organisms and animal cells to perform their experiments. Generally, pharmaceutical companies hire medical scientists.

  MICROBIOLOGIST

A microbiologist studies the life form under a microscopic view, including the study of characteristics and interaction of micro-organisms such as algae, fungi, and bacteria. Microbiologists can be more specific, like bacteriology, virology, and parasitology.

CLINICAL TECHNICIAN

Clinical Technicians are also known as biological technicians or medical laboratory scientists.

They perform blood tests, urinalysis, and other tests on specimens and detect and diagnose conditions and diseases.

How to start a career in Biotechnology?

Candidates who want a biotechnology career must complete their bachelor’s degree in biotechnology. Its duration is four years, and candidates also get a chance to discover new opportunities in this field through an internship. It allows you to learn more about what to expect in your future. In addition, it offers you a chance to meet with professionals in your field.

After that, many companies can hire as they require a graduate degree. But to open to more opportunities master’s degree is required. Also, completing your master’s gives you a chance to specialise in something, such as pharmaceutical research, biomedical engineering, bio-informatics, and environmental engineering.

If you prefer to be more specific in your field, you can continue your education and complete a doctorate. This path will lead you to more research work, and you can be a part of a research team or organisation and be a scientist in your field.

There are bachelor’s courses, master’s courses, and doctorate programmes in this field. One can apply for UG courses after completing the 12th. The courses offered in biotechnology are mentioned below:

Bachelor’s course-3/4 years

       B.sc in biotechnology

       B.tech in biotechnology

Masters course-2 years

        M.sc in biotechnology

        M.tech in biotechnology

Some of the best colleges to enrol in biotechnology courses are listed below:

  • IIT DELHI
  • IIT MUMBAI
  • IIT ROORKEE
  • IIT HYDERABAD
  • JMI NEW DELHI
  • AIIMS DELHI
  • MSU BARODA
  • VIT VELLORE
  • ICT MUMBAI
  • JNU DELHI
  • AMU ALIGARH

Institute for research in India

  • Indian council of agriculture research
  • Department of science and technology
  • Council of scientists and industrial research
  • Constituent research labs of the department of biotechnology
  • Defence research and development organisation

Who can study Biotechnology?

The applicant must have completed their 10+2 with PCB subject from a recognised board of education and with a minimum percentage of marks specified by your chosen university.
