Look At The Frustration Of Young Children’: SC Flags CBSE 12th OSM Evaluation Issues, Seeks Remedial Action

The Supreme Court of India has communicated its apprehension in connection with the grievances regarding CBSE’s 12th OSM System. While hearing the case, the court mentions that it cannot disregard the discomfort of the students and directs the CBSE to furnish the status report regarding CBSE’s measures towards the improvement of the process. The matter has once again drawn the public’s attention towards the digital assessment system developed by the board to mitigate the process of evaluating the answer sheets of class XII students.

This matter of controversy has emerged as one of the most trending news stories of CBSE for the year as both students and teachers along with experts are questioning the efficacy of the newly developed On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.

What Is CBSE OSM Evaluation?

CBSE OSM Evaluation means the On-Screen Marking system used for evaluation of 12th class board examination answer sheets. In this system, answer sheets are scanned and later assessed by a person on a computer.

As per CBSE, this system’s introduction was meant to help eliminate mistakes made in summation, entering, and uploading of marks quickly. In addition, the system has the potential of speeding up evaluation processes and ensure greater transparency. However, since the results came out, various students have expressed concerns with regard to their marks and scanned answer sheets.

Why Did the Supreme Court Intervene?

The matter reached the courts after petitions alleged discrepancies in the evaluation process. During the hearing, the CBSE Supreme Court proceedings highlighted the emotional impact on students.

The Court reportedly remarked that the frustration of young students was visible and sought a detailed response from CBSE. It directed the board to explain how complaints were being handled and what corrective steps could be taken if genuine evaluation errors were found.

Concerns Raised by Students and Parents

Multiple students who obtained scanned copies of their answer sheets pointed out faults including lack of clarity in scans, missing pages, missing additional sheets containing vital information, and unassessed answers. The complaints led to discussions in the wake of the national introduction of the online evaluation system.

Parents have also raised doubts about how technical issues during scanning and displaying answer sheets may have an impact on the overall scores of their kids especially in competitive subjects where minor variations can determine admission to a college.

CBSE’s Response to the OSM Evaluation Issue

However, CBSE has contended that OSM system has been introduced with the intention of making the process more accurate and efficient. The board has mentioned that certain teams have been formed to deal with any grievances and if any student feels that there is some mistake in evaluation, he/she can file a complaint through official methods.
In addition to that, CBSE has also explained that many students have availed themselves of the option of using verification and re-evaluation portal.

What Problems Have Been Reported?

Education experts and some examiners have pointed out several possible challenges in the digital evaluation process. These include poor-quality scans, difficulty reading handwritten answers on screen, and the possibility that formatting or punctuation may not appear clearly in scanned copies.

Some evaluators have also argued that the transition to the new system happened quickly and that additional training and testing may have been required before full implementation.

How the Issue Affects Students

It is necessary for the OSM Evaluation by the CBSE 12th to be discussed since the scores obtained in Class 12 exams are required to gain admission into universities or professional schools and scholarships.

An individual who believes his/her scores have been reduced on account of a technical error may experience stress and confusion while planning further educational decisions. This is the reason why the Supreme Court emphasized on the need to focus on the concerns of students.

What Remedial Action Could Be Taken?

Although the Court initiated the process of getting a response from the CBSE, many possible remedial measures in relation to this issue that have already been discussed in the public domain like stricter verification of the scanned answer sheets, clearer grievance redressal mechanisms, more review processes for resolving contested evaluations and better technical safeguards in the scanning process.

Any future course of action will depend on the reply from CBSE and the instructions that the courts will issue after going through the status report.

What Students Should Do Now

Students who have concerns about their marks should use the official CBSE verification, re-evaluation, and grievance channels. They should keep copies of their applications, payment receipts, and any communication received from the board.

It is also important to rely only on official CBSE notifications and avoid unverified claims circulating on social media.

Conclusion

The concern regarding CBSE OSM Evaluation has emerged as a hot topic in the Indian education space. The Supreme Court’s comment regarding the disappointment of students has exerted extra pressure on the board to provide explanation regarding the workings of computer-based evaluation system and complaints resolution process.

As the case progresses, students and parents will be monitoring closely regarding the eventual safety measures, assessment processes and procedural changes. For the moment however, the focus will remain on ensuring fairness, transparency, and confidence in the OSM Evaluation System of CBSE.
